After the unexpected passing of Jim Mackenzie in the spring of 1968, Chuck Fairbanks stepped in to lead the Oklahoma Sooners through a crucial period in the program’s history. Building on a stellar 10-1 season and a #2 national ranking in 1967, Fairbanks guided the team to continued success, capturing back-to-back Big 8 titles in 1967 and 1968. The era also saw Steve Owens earn the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 1969. A significant turning point came in 1970 with the midseason adoption of the Wishbone offense, a move that laid the groundwork for Oklahoma’s next great football dynasty.

The Switzer Dynasty!

Barry Switzer arrived at Oklahoma in 1966 alongside Jim Mackenzie, determined to restore the program to its former glory. When Chuck Fairbanks departed for the NFL, Switzer stepped into the head coaching role and embarked on a remarkable 16-year journey that would come to define the word “dynasty.” Under his leadership, the Sooners dominated college football, capturing 12 Big 8 Conference titles and three national championships (1974, 1975, and 1985). Switzer’s teams achieved an impressive 157-29-4 record, earning him a career winning percentage of .837 and securing his place among the sport’s greatest coaches.

The Stoops Dynasty!

When Bob Stoops arrived at Oklahoma in 1999, the program was in the midst of a 12-year drought, with no bowl appearances since 1994 and no Big 8 or Big 12 titles since 1987. Stoops quickly turned things around by assembling an exceptional coaching staff and recruiting a standout quarterback, sparking a revival that saw the Sooners go 7-5 in his first year and win the national championship in 2000.

Stoops instilled a no-excuses culture of winning, leading the team to a stellar 190-48 record over 18 seasons. During his tenure, Oklahoma claimed 10 Big 12 titles and played in three additional national championship games. Bob Stoops left a legacy of excellence and consistent success, cementing his place as one of the greatest coaches in college football history
